One-Click Unsubscribe Explained
2024 Has been the year of change for bulk email. With Gmail and Yahoo leading the charge, standards have been put in place and now are being enforced. One of these standards is a One-Click Unsubscribe enabled for all bulk email sent. Below, we will highlight a few key takeaways. You can also read a great article produced by one of our ESP’s here; much of the information shared below comes from this article.

What is a One-Click List-Unsubscribe?
Ultimately, as a sender, you must make it very easy for someone to remove themselves if desired. The One-Click List-Unsubscribe header will allow the inbox providers to add an easy, one-click button for unsubscribing. This will not eliminate the requirement of having the unsubscribe option in the body of the email but having both should make it very easy for the recipient to unsubscribe.
Below is how it will likely present itself
Google has also started to bring in the one-click list-unsubscribe in replacement of other actions. Recipients who click spam will be offered an unsubscribe instead. We’ve been told that this is being suggested to users who repetitively delete mail without reading it or who never engaged with a stream of mail.
Is it required?
As of June 1, 2024, bulk emails MUST have a very easy way to one-click opt-out of your email traffic. Gmail and Yahoo have specified that the email must have a list-unsubscribe option
How does it impact you as a sender?
If you’re a good sender using best practices and listening to your recipients’ engagement indicators, one-click list-unsubscribes shouldn’t worry you. Unsubscribes are simply another form of information you can use to get even better.
In fact, the theory is that because it is so easy to One-Click Spam Complain currently, adding the One-Click Unsubscribe will hopefully deter users from marking your mail as SPAM.
Do you need you need to do anything?
The good news here is that you do not need to do anything, MindFire has taken care of adding this feature to your mail stream automatically. Anyone who unsubscribes this way will still end up with the event in MindFire as your standard unsubscribe link does. This feature is live for all emails being sent through MindFire currently.
Where is is supported?
Primarily at Gmail and Yahoo, support will likely expand to other Email Platforms. Please keep in mind though, that even though MindFire is inserting the required headers to support this feature, it is not guaranteed that Google will support it on all of your mail. We are told the Google is only offering the unsubscribe button in trusted situations, and they have some algorithm/AI that determines this. So please do not be alarmed if you do not see the button.
Conclusion
Staying current with Email Delivery Standards is very important in today’s digital world. MindFire is committed to adhering to these standards and enabling our partners to do the same! If you have any questions about these topics discussed, be sure to reach your account manager.
